Business Pivots looks at how a switch in strategy helped catapult a business forward. Within a year of launching their company, the founders of 9Five Eyewear, based in Chula Vista, Calif. So the four business partners, who had started out as good friends with a shared passion for skateboarding, decided to rethink their business. “We were initially getting our glasses mass-manufactured in mainland China,” recalls Mike Metcalf, one of 9Five’s four founders and owners. 9Five’s strategic pivot has turned out to be a winning gambit.
At first glance, the wide range of glasses displayed in the center of the store is visible when stepping into the 9five Eyewear store in downtown San Diego. Framed pictures of musicians, artists and the 9five skate team wearing 9five glasses are displayed on the teal green walls. The 9five store carries original designs constructed by the brand’s graphic designers. In 2008, 9five eyewear was birthed. It began in co-owner and brand manager Jay Cabauatan’s garage where the 9five team worked long days and nights designing, shipping merchandise and developing the brand. Co-owner and creative director Mike Metcalf said 9five was originally conceived as a clothing brand.

I know—you rock them and they’re not being stashed away. That being said, why has that word “collect” become so taboo among the most hardcore sneaker connoisseurs? That’s one of the questions I was hoping to answer last Saturday when...
