As project coordinator and cultural resource specialist at Austin’s Parks and Recreation Department—an urban planner with a preservationist background—she devoted over two years to crafting the city’s Cemetery Master Plan ,... Mapplethorpe is someone we think we know, thanks to the disgusting efforts of Jesse Helms and other conservative culture warriors to censor and shame a gay artist and his supporters. The photographer’s bulging archive, which features no fewer than 120,000 negatives, 3,500 Polaroids, and piles of correspondence and ephemera, was acquired in 2011 by an unusual partnership of two museums, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art... CONSUMER SATURDAY; LENSES TO CHANGE EYE COLOR

SOME people are content with the color of their eyes. Some are not. Once upon a time, that was that. Then along came tinted contact lenses. The first ones, a generation ago, had a brightly colored iris painted on them. They did not catch on, except with movie actors, because the colors looked unnatural and people had trouble adjusting to hard plastic lenses. Clear soft contact lenses, which came out later, were more comfortable but trickier to...
