Demonstrators in Newark were among thousands in the country who turned out to show their support. The photographer’s focus on faces rather than multitudes emphasizes that the marchers were people with lives and stories of their own, who decided to try to make a difference that day. Martin Luther King Jr. , and thousands of people were pouring into the streets. Coretta Scott King, Dr. King’s widow, had called on Americans to join her in “a campaign of conscience” to uplift the poor. He zoomed in. He focused on the individuals, not the multitudes, who gathered for the Newark leg of the demonstration.
She had already surprised everyone by becoming the first black woman in Congress after an upset victory in 1968. Then Shirley Chisholm signed up for work as a census taker in Brooklyn, where she represented a range of struggling neighborhoods. many of the “enumerators” for the 1970 census quit because so many poor black and Hispanic residents refused to answer questions or even open the door. Chisholm, a daughter of immigrants from Barbados who studied American history with the zeal of a woman determined to shape it, understood such sentiments. It wasn’t pontificating. It wasn’t condescending, or scolding. it required the same charm and resolve she showed first as an educator, then as a politician.
