1970: A subdued Muhammad Ali applied at the New York State Athletic Commission for a boxing license. But a federal court ruled in his favor in 1970, clearing the way for Ali to resume his career, and his playful boasting. 24, 1970, it had been more than three years since Muhammad Ali had been able to do what he did best: playfully boast and then skillfully box. On that day, however, Ali traveled to the offices of the New York State Athletic Commission to apply for a boxing license. Ali had not boxed since March 22, 1967, when he stopped Zora Folley in seven rounds to defend his heavyweight title. He was the man who called himself “the Greatest,” who could “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” — whose career had come to resemble one long, sustained exclamation point.
