Tiny, ultralight Geco 1080p action cam mounts to sunglasses - Gizmag

The Mark II's diminutive package necessitates a lack of some of the features of other modern action cams, but it should make recording HD footage simple. An on/off/record button provides quick control, and the camera records. The basic hardware and limited filming times won't be endearing to many action cam users, but the Mark II should appeal to those looking for a simple cam without the larger size and more complicated mounting hardware of competitors. Geco held a 2013 Indiegogo campaign that appears to have never gotten off the ground, but it's continued working on the project and is on the cusp of launching the Mark II. The company was showing the cam at CES earlier this month and told us that...

The Discovery of Roscoe Holcomb and the “High Lonesome Sound” - The New Yorker

The great dragnet of the American folk revival—which began in New York City in the mid-nineteen-thirties, and, lore dictates, started to falter when Bob Dylan powered up an electric guitar at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival—resulted in the... Most hadn’t been thinking about New York City at all. He was looking for “Depression songs” to play with his folk band, the New Lost City Ramblers. “I said to myself, I’m going to go to Kentucky, because they have a depression going on there. I’ve never experienced a depression—all I’ve heard are the records,” he said recently.

Snapchat introduces ‘Spectacles’ eyewear that record video

“In an unmarked building on a quiet side street just off the beach in Venice, California, 26-year-old Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel stands in a small conference room. He’s draped a towel over a mysterious object sitting on a table. He is eager to the point of jitters,” Seth Stevenson reports for The Wall Street Journal. “‘You wanna see it?’ he asks, grinning widely. There’s drama in this reveal: I’m about to join an exceedingly small circle of people whom Spiegel has shown the object to. As he...

A Performance Digs Into the Family History on a Found 1950s Wire Recorder

Alison S. M. Kobayashi in Say Something Bunny! (photo by Henry Chan)In 2011, a friend gave Alison S. M. Kobayashi a wire recorder, a now obsolete form of audio technology that used steel wire for magnetic recordings. Included with the estate-sale find were two unlabeled spools, each dense with unidentified voices. As Kobayashi listened, characters and narratives emerged from the distortion, and, based on offhand comments about culture and holidays, she gradually traced these...

These video-recording glasses are a privacy nightmare

Glasses with built-in video cameras haven’t been embraced by consumers like some companies had hoped. First was Google Glass, which was discontinued because of privacy concerns among other things. Then came Snapchat’s Spectacles, an intriguing but ultimately failed attempt at appealing to younger audiences. Now another company is throwing its hat into the ring with video-recording sunglasses that let users upload clips to Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube directly from a mobile app....
