In the dream I am at some sort of a job or an important event and everything that can go wrong is going extra wrong. Sheer horror, total panic testing my inner strength and deeply fighting back the urge to just give up. How the fuck will I survive this. In 2011 I raced an Ironman in Mexico. About thirty minutes from the start of the race, my dream partly came true. Panic set in as I realized that I had forgotten my sunglasses aka eyeball protectors from things flying in the wind for 112 miles of cycling and my watch aka the only way to know how long it was taking me. Both things that I had relied on heavily... Then with a, “fuck it” I just started the swim and when I finished I said, “check” out loud and went on to the next thing and so on till it was over.
We’ve covered three driving games now, and seen three different approaches. Out Run centred showed the car, driver and passenger and all, and focused on the experience of getting away through a beautiful landscape. Stunt Car Racer took things inside the car, and concentrated on the technical experience of driving. Ivan ‘Ironman’ Stewart’s Super Off-Road zooms right out to show four tiny trucks in a top-down view of a rugged single screen track. I have fond memories of three player games, enjoying the chaos that trying to fit four cars through tiny spaces provokes.
