A small aperture solution for the 114 million presbyopic Americans
In an effort to clear the blur, AcuFocus, Inc., has developed an advanced solution to presbyopia with the first-of-its-kind KAMRA® corneal inlay by harnessing the pinhole effect with small aperture technology. The pinhole effect provides a solution to presbyopia, a natural loss of near vision that happens to all of us starting in our mid-40s. With presbyopia, the natural lens of the eye that flexes to focus light becomes inflexible. This makes seeing words and objects up close increasingly difficult, leaving us squinting and reaching for reading glasses to see texts on the phone, menus at restaurants or read a document on the computer.
As a college enrollment services manager outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sally Ruback knows what it is like to struggle with her reading vision. Sally is buried in data. Her days are full of spreadsheets, data analysis, emails and text messages followed by hours of meetings with college administrators and deans reviewing enrollment data and documents. And while she loves what she does for the students, she didn’t love her reading vision. Then she learned about the KAMRA inlay.
When Sally was in her early 40s, she realized her reading vision was getting fuzzy and that she needed reading glasses. Well, one pair became two, and then three and so on and so on as they started multiplying. “Wearing reading glasses became this shuffle game that I was playing all the time: on your head, at the end of your nose, down on the table.”
After struggling with her reading vision for years, Sally was fed up. A few days later Sally was in Dr. Dudley’s Appleton, Wisconsin, office for a screening to see if the inlay was right for her. About a month later, Sally became a KAMRA inlay patient and is enjoying not having to grab her glasses before meetings, to read the computer or get through her day.

Smaller and thinner than a contact lens, the KAMRA inlay is a mini-ring with a tiny opening in the center creating a pinhole effect. The inlay is placed in only one eye by an ophthalmologist to help restore reading vision. The KAMRA inlay also expands the clear focal point over a long range giving people clarity from near to far while maintaining natural depth perception.
“It has just enhanced the quality of my life, my daily life. My vision is so improved from what it has been. I can read my computer screen and my phone, when before it was nothing but fuzz without glasses,” Sally explained.
