Looking for a new look for the new year?
Eyewear is one of the first things people notice, and fashion has changed and evolved throughout the years, dating back to when Sir Elton John was instrumental in stirring things up in the look lenses department when he splashed on the scene with his outrageous, daring frames that were an extension of his creative streak.
“Because people generally recognize you by your face, the eyeglasses you choose to wear are a very real part of your identity,” writes Erinn Morgan of Allaboutvision.com. “Eyeglasses can help people see the real you, or they can help create the image you want. The key is to find the right eyeglass frames to match your personality and lifestyle.”
We went from outrageous to thoughtful, big to teeny-tiny, thin, frameless glasses that tended to make one look stern and unapproachable. Now, research looks like we’re heading back into the big, bold look.
What’s hot and happening in the frame department today?
According to Sylvianne Chauveau at Oakley Canada, some of the most popular frames for Canadian men and women is “clean and uncomplicated styles for life on the go. In Canada, the retro frame style is one of the most popular trends this season — including frames with deep square lens shapes for men and feminine design inspired from masculine retro rectangular frame style for women.”
Is there a different frame shape or size that is more popular for men vs women?
“We see a tendency to look for frames that provide a specific look and that are right for your lifestyle, more than seeking for frames that correspond to a specific face shape. Comfort and durability are also key features for Canadians. It’s a very personal decision, as no two lifestyles are the same.”
What colours are Canadian’s most drawn to when it comes to eye wear?
Are patterns popular or do people generally prefer one colour?
“Canadian women seem to be drawn to tortoise patterns. The Nine-To-Five is a popular model for the women seeking all-day comfort and is offered in a variety of Tortoise colours mixed with Navy Blue, Purple, Green.
“Men this season are drawn by matte finishes and transparency.
“Of course, for both men and women, classic black is always on trend.”
What tips would you offer someone who’s looking to purchase a pair of glasses?
“Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone!”
Chauveau also recommends prescription sunglasses with wow factor.
“This season, Oakley launched Prizm Technology in prescription lenses, emphasizing colours where the eye is most sensitive to detail. This is the first time lenses have been purpose-built to enhance vision for specific activities like baseball, golf or trail running.”
