Buying clothing at thrift shops and consignment stores not only saves you money but sometimes provides you with a bigger selection, since the clothing is not just from this year, but many years. You can save on electronics by buying used and refurbished. If you want to buy new, shopping clearance sales is always an excellent strategy, as is shopping at discount and outlet stores. Joining mailing lists and loyalty clubs is a smart way to get additional coupons and deals — if you don’t shop more because of all the reminders.
If you ask Galactic Con co-founder Joe Manzo how many people he expects at the second-year comic book convention in Middletown this weekend, he lets out a sigh. Manzo unveiled Middletown's first comic con last year with the thought that there was a market for low-cost, family-friendly conventions. Instead, an estimated 2,500 from across the region flooded the event, which was held at the Everett Meredith Middle School where a fans faced a long line to get inside -- a line that snaked down Broad Street at times. "We were totally swamped," says Manzo, 37, a Middletown-based web designer who founded the event with his wife Sapphira. First, Galactic Con is moving off Broad Street to the much larger Mtown Sports Complex off U. S. 301 (938 Middletown Warwick Rd. ) with 10-foot walkways instead of last year's narrower 5-foot paths in between vendors and exhibitors.
