Software that turns eye movement into musical notes lets you compose music or play a tune on a virtual instrument with just your eyes. Called Eye Conductor, it was developed by Andreas Refsgaard at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design in Denmark and his colleagues to provide a musical outlet for people with physical disabilities. Caring for a boy with muscular dystrophy, Refsgaard found that it was hard to help him express himself creatively. The system uses an off-the-shelf eye tracker with a webcam to follow a person’s gaze. Specific eye movements are interpreted as notes, currently allowing you to play a virtual piano, violin or synth bass, or beats to play one of three virtual drums. Rhythm in your eyes Face and eye movements can be calibrated to an individual’s abilities.

Nobody gives a shit about VR. Okay, some people are giving a shit. People in the VR industry care, and people covering that industry, and maybe very enthusiastic gamers with a lot of time and money and dreams of a Lawnmower Man life. They could care less about VR. They suffered tennis in Nintendo’s weird smelling VR set up and they trucked their ass to arcades and Circuit City to try demos in the 90s and they’ve heard it all before and for the last few years they’ve had to... It has the power to make people give a shit. Remember, a $600 Rift is really more like $1400 if you count the burly PC that’s capable of running it. More people own a PlayStation 4 than own a gaming computer with enough juice to handle a Rift or Vive.

Of Course Dubai is Building a 500-Foot Gold-Plated Picture Frame

Dubai is a bit like the Houston of the Middle East. It’s unapologetically bold, brash, and over-the-top — a city that elevates conspicuous consumption to an art form. Every monument, building, and theme park is more lavish and expensive than the last. So, when architects imagined framing the city’s skyline with a 50-story-tall, gold-leafed picture frame, no one batted an eye. This month will see the opening of The Dubai Frame. The massive frame consists of two 150-meter-high glass towers —...
