On the highway south of Bloemfontein, South Africa, Stuart Bray sits in the back seat of a safari truck, sweating in jeans and boots in the 100-degree heat of a December afternoon. Bray and his driver have just picked up two Chinese government officials from the airport, and now they’re wedged in next to him, their expressions hidden by sunglasses. Bray rides cheerfully until, an hour into the drive, his cell phone buzzes. A tabloid reporter is calling from London, the city where Bray lives most of the year and where he’s getting a high-profile divorce. “No, it’s not true that I don’t like animals,” Bray tells the reporter, irritated. The phone signal dies as the truck enters a wind-blasted, rocky expanse of scrubland called the Karoo. After an awkward silence, Bray turns his companions’ attention to the creatures they’ve come to see.

Leading Lady: Kirsten Ferrara - Naplesillustrated

Ferrara says she thrives on chaos, which partly explains why she was drawn early in her professional life to the hectic world of trading, serving as a junior trader of NASDAQ commodities, and later as a senior trader for over-the-counter... Now officially retired in Naples, where she has lived since 2007, Ferrara is still a fireball, throwing her energy and talent into fundraising for myriad nonprofit groups, from Habitat for Humanity to Florida Cancer Specialists and the ELS for... An animal lover who is often seen around town with her toy poodles Spaetzle and Goulash, Ferrara also supports the Humane Society Naples and the ASPCA. Ferrara lately has been busy as the event chair for the Old Bags Luncheon, a major fundraiser for The Shelter for Abused Women & Children.

For Bay Area Parents, Calming Gifts the Whole Family Can Love

As a busy mom, I am constantly amazed how many clothes, books, and toys accumulate in our house. And of course, my picky toddler is ridiculously discerning, with his favorites that he’s completely devoted to — his red cardigan, Richard Scarry’s What Do People Do All Day, and stuffed penguin. So I’m often donating or (thoughtfully) re-gifting the excess. Not into a cluttered house and a floor full of toys? Here are some gift ideas for families that place experiences over objects, and which...

Alka Pradhan v. Gitmo

The Galaxy 19 is a communications satellite that orbits over North America, beaming free-to-air programming to hundreds of thousands of households. It also happens to be the way detainees at Guantánamo Bay get their television. The satellite carries a wealth of religious programming, from “Bible Explorations” to “God’s Learning Channel” to “Global Buddhist Network” — not a lineup well tailored to the particular viewing interests of the Gitmo demographic. What detainees tend to be most...

Two Trans Guys Have a Son. Are They Raising Him Gender-Neutral?

S. Bear BergmanPhoto by Zoe GemelliA couple of years ago, when my son Stanley was quite small, there was a media firestorm that started in Toronto and blew across the world about a couple who declined to announce the genital arrangement of their child to strangers, believing this to be a satisfactory way to keep said child from being overwhelmed by people’s expectations about how kids with that genital arrangement should behave. It sounds peculiar when I put it like that, doesn’t it? What...
