History Of Eyeglasses

Salvino D'Armato degli Armati of Florence (1258–1312) is one of the possible inventors of eyeglasses. It was previously thought that he invented eyeglasses around 1284, although the evidence now suggests that this was a hoax.
In a 1684 history of Florence, Leopoldo del Migliore wrote that the church of Santa Maria Maggiore contained a memorial honoring D'Armati with the inscription: Here lies Salvino degl' Armati, son of Armato of Florence, inventor of eyeglasses. May God forgive his sins. A.D. 1317. The church has been rebuilt several times since the 13th century,
The earliest eyeglasses were for the correction of hyperopia (farsightedness) and presbyopia (age-related farsightedness); eyeglasses to correct myopia (nearsightedness) were not invented until the 15th century....

What If an Israeli National Symbol Is a Fake? - New Republic

One July day in 1993, a senior curator at Israel’s national museum in Jerusalem approached a glass display case accompanied by a security guard. If you bent down in front of it and squinted, you could make out an exquisite drawing of a twelve-stringed lyre, carved into the stone. Underneath the lyre, a two-line inscription in ancient Hebrew read: “Belonging to Maadana, daughter of the king. Hundreds of ancient Hebrew seals have been unearthed in Israel since the nineteenth century. They are carved oval stones, sometimes as small as pebbles, which their owners would wear as amulets or stamp into small pieces of clay, leaving an imprint that would seal a document.

When we first shared The Trump Files , we pulled together strong investigative journalism revealing both Donald Trump’s path to power — a route cleared by his father’s fortune and political connections — and his blemished record as a businessman. This week, we pull back the curtains a bit further, revealing more of Trump’s history of public and private prejudice, of outsourcing to low-wage countries and of profiting from business ventures while leaving partners, shareholders and customers... The investigation of Donald J. Trump Collection shirts, eyeglasses, perfume, cufflinks and suits, found that they are manufactured in low-wage countries like Bangladesh, China and Honduras.
