Sunglasses Over Eyeglasses

Eyewear consists of items and accessories worn on or over the eyes, for fashion or adornment, protection against the environment, and to improve or enhance visual perception.
Common forms of eyewear include glasses (also called eyeglasses or spectacles), sunglasses, and contact lenses. Eyewear can also include more utilitarian forms of eye protection, such as goggles. Conversely, blindfolds are a form of eyewear used to block vision for a variety of purposes.

Jaime Lynn Viloria, a low vision rehabilitation consultant with Braille Institute in Rancho Mirage, was assisting Mrs. Felice Chiapperini, manager of field services for the Braille Institute, said that the mobile van is an important resource for the visually-impaired in the San Gorgonio Pass and throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties. “Not everybody with vision loss can come to our center in Rancho Mirage,” he said. The mobile van is one of many resources available through the Braille Institute. Chiapperini spoke to the Beaumont-Cherry Valley Rotary Club on March 3, about the Braille Institute, which was founded by Montana cowboy J. Robert Atkinson after an accidental gunshot wound left him blind in 1912. Atkinson learned to read Braille... In less than five years, he had transcribed nearly one million words of ink print into Braille.

Van Buren Lions Club is partnering with an optometry school in Memphis to bring eyeglasses to the needy in Central America. Nathan Lipe, a member of Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH) at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, recruited the Van Buren Lions Club two years ago to join his school’s efforts. “Nathan approached our club on his first mission trip and we have been partnering every since,” said Terry Carson, Van Buren Lions Club president. Each year, SVOSH members take used eyeglasses collected by Lions Club International to areas where people are unable to get quality eye care or pay for prescription glasses. Previously, after collecting eyeglasses over the course of the year, the club would send them to a center in Texas to be repurposed.

Wine glasses are seven times as big as they used to be

Like our houses and our cars and our donuts, everything is bigger these days.TreeHugger often complains about how our houses have grown, how cars are so much bigger, how portion sizes in restaurants have increased in size, but many of these changes are relatively short-term, going back perhaps to the Second World War. Now a new study published in the BMJ looks at the size of wine glasses used in England, going right back to the 17th century, and find that glass sizes have increased...

Do Computer Glasses Really Work?

Dear Lifehacker,My eyes often feel tired after staring at the computer all day. So I'm wondering if glasses designed for computer use actually help (for example, those yellow-tinted computer/gaming glasses I've seen mentioned on Lifehacker or regular glasses with special coatings). They seem pricey and I'm a little skeptical about all the claims, but I also want to protect my vision. Should I buy a pair of these? Signed,Sore EyesDear Sore,Vision problems are unfortunately one of the hazards...
