Ultraviolet index

Ultraviolet index

The ultraviolet index or UV Index is an international standard measurement of the strength of ultraviolet radiation from the sun at a particular place and time. The scale was developed by Canadian scientists in 1992, then adopted and standardized by the UN's World Health Organization and World Meteorological Organization in 1994. It is primarily used in daily forecasts aimed at the general public, and is increasingly available as an hourly forecast as well.
The UV Index is designed as an open-ended linear scale, directly proportional to the intensity of UV radiation that causes sunburn on human skin. For example, if a light-skinned individual begins to sunburn in 30 minutes at UV Index 6, then that individual should expect to sunburn in about 15 minutes at UV Index 12 — twice the...

There’s a hell of a lot of build up and anticipation, a lot of wondering what the day will look and feel like, a lot of nervous yet optimistic energy buzzing around as you take to the Florida interstate to finally be reunited. For diehards, it’s more than a little emotional to finally come back to the ballpark—any ballpark—after a long, dark, wintery four-month hiatus. If it happens in Florida, there’s a good chance that the weather will be beautiful and the mood congenial, making it hard not to get a little teary behind your sunglasses. Spring Training may be, as they say, meaningless, but after what we all endured last October, it’s hard not to carry our lofty expectations with us as we push through that turnstile for the first time.

Lunch at Diwan, in the Aga Khan Museum Is a Delight for the Eyes As Well As the Stomach

Getting to the Aga Khan Museum is not easy if you don't drive so let's get that out of the way right now. The last thing you would expect to see here, on the outskirts of the city proper, is a large, ultra modern building with a shimmering white granite top. The interior of the restaurant itself is a lovely mix of modern, clean white walls and gleaming wood floors and ornately carved, painted wooden panels that evoke the luxury of an early 19th century Syrian home. Sumptuous and rich but modern and airy at the same time, soaring windows flood the room with bright sunlight, prompting a handful of diners to don their sunglasses indoors but I am okay with that during the cold of February.

LEVY: Woman, 51, living her best life with dementia

Mary Beth Wighton was told by her family doctor at the age of 45 — after being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia — to go home and “get her affairs in order.”The doctor, she says, also advised her that those in her situation typically die within six to eight years after receiving the diagnosis — and then made sure her driver’s licence was promptly revoked.Wighton, who was initially more upset about losing her licence than the actual diagnosis, said she was informed she “no longer had the...

The Next Stage Festival offers theatre experiences in true fringe spirit

Fringe festivals are as important for what they give as what they take away. The Next Stage Festival, which opened at Toronto's Factory Theatre on Wednesday, provides indie artists with the essentials: a venue, a few lights and some promotional support. Beyond that, production budgets are typically tiny and sets need to be stored in the wings, so the work can't rely on much but its barest bones. This minimalism is my favourite part – dance and theatre stripped to their basics. I caught three...

Michael Pavitt: Underpants, brown paper bags and Gladiator - sport's best and worst endorsements

Having finished fourth in the US Figure Skating Championships, which acted as the national trials, she described herself as "furious" with the scores...
