Thomas William Harman, 31, has already spent three months in Kerobokan jail.

It is alleged the Perth man stole the sunglasses from a duty free shop inside the international departure terminal on July 30. He faces a maximum five years in prison.

Before the prosecutors revealed their demand in the Denpasar District Court, the Australian's lawyer, Erwin Siregar, was upbeat for his client.

"I am always optimistic in this case, very optimistic," he said.

"The case is very simple."

Outside the court, Mr Harman spoke briefly to the press.

"I'm sorry for my crime, I've been in jail for three months so I'm sorry," he said. "Of course I do feel remorse."

Mr Siregar said the sentence demand was too high.

"I really do hope the judge will be very humble when he makes the decision regarding this case," he said after the sentence demand was delivered.

Mr Siregar said he was not arguing his client is innocent but urged the judge to consider the apology and that the Australian had never been convicted of a crime before.

He said Mr Harman had apologised to the store and offered to pay double the cost of the sunglasses which could be bought online for $US150.

"At that time he has to fly to Australia, at that time and he is in a hurry, when the security find the bag he did not say this is mine or take it. He tried to pay double to the shop but they refused it.

"Whatever happens, happens," Mr Harman said as he was returned to jail.

In the court, prosecutors argued the six-month sentence is lenient given Mr Harman has never been convicted before and showed remorse.

But they argued jail time must be served.

"The CCTV vision shows he took the Gucci glasses and shows intention," lawyer Made Ayu Citra Maya Sari told the court.

"Thus, the intention has been proven convincingly against the criminal law article 362."

The court will resume on Tuesday for sentencing.
